The future looks bright for drones, especially in data collection and transportation. However, most applications only work at scale if drones can operate with minimal oversight by human pilots. XOsight aims to develop drones for logistics that are almost fully autonomous by giving them advanced situational awareness.
Current drones lack awareness of their environment. Drone startup firm XOsight looks at the information processing capabilities of human pilots to change this. Equipping drones with high resolution omnidirectional cameras has proven to be an important step forward. XOsight drones have onboard AI-software that processes images in real-time for collision avoidance and navigation, in a manner that mimics the behaviour of a human safety pilot.

The global commercial drone market is expected to grow from $14bn in 2018 to $43bn in 2025. One of the areas where drone operations require a large degree of autonomy is the logistics sector. According to a report by Research and Markets the global drones for logistics market will have a value of $11bn in 2022 and should grow to $29bn in 2027 by a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of over 20%. Drones are already routinely used for inventory counting in warehouses, as well as for delivery.
